Van Gogh & The Roulins | Amsterdam Exhibition

3 October 2025 – 11 January 2026 | the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam presents a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition: Van Gogh & the Roulins. For the very first time, an entire exhibition is dedicated exclusively to the portraits Vincent van Gogh painted of his close friend Joseph Roulin, his wife Augustine, and their children in the summer of 1888 in Arles, France.

The Story Behind Van Gogh & the Roulins

In the summer of 1888, Vincent van Gogh befriended Joseph Roulin, a postman at the train station in Arles. Roulin, with his striking beard and blue uniform, became one of Van Gogh’s most painted models. Delighted by the opportunity, Van Gogh also created portraits of Roulin’s wife Augustine and their three children: Armand (17), Camille (11), and baby Marcelle.

This deep friendship and collaboration inspired some of Van Gogh’s most powerful and emotional portraits. For the first time, a large part of this impressive series will be reunited and displayed together in Amsterdam.
