THE STORY

For the first time in history, over fourteen portraits of the Roulin family, painted by Vincent van Gogh in Arles between 1888 and 1889, are reunited in Amsterdam. The exhibition reveals the close friendship between Van Gogh and the Roulin family through letters, personal objects and his most intimate portraits. Joseph Roulin, a postman, his wife Augustine and their children became both subjects and a source of inspiration, captured with vivid colour and expressive brushwork.

The exhibition explores themes of family, friendship and connection, showing how the Roulins offered Van Gogh support and companionship during his time in Arles. Bringing these works together celebrates the enduring bond between artist and muse, inviting visitors to experience the emotion, humanity and creativity that define Van Gogh’s portrait series.
